The relation between the time-dependence of the bar-shaped perturbation in a barred galaxy and the resulting spiral structure is analyzed using a concept according to which the bar, after initial bar-forming instability, further increases in strength due to the fact that the spiral forced by the bar drains angular momentum from the bar. This hypothesis is consistent with N-body experiments. The behavior is simulated by a growing oval distortion that, after the initial increase, slowly approaches a limiting strength. The behavior of cold disks with the stars initially in purely circular motion is also investigated and the results compared with those found for the gas response to oval distortions. The linear cyclic approximation is used to estimate the stellar response to growing oval distortions analytically and also to develop some insight into the kinematical mechanisms that lead to the observed behavior.
