The software development for satellite systems, in special ground segments and payload processing and broadcasting systems, often has requirements for tasks that generically widespread commercial software development tools have not been specifically designed to accomplish. This problem lead to the use of a multitude of tools, from diverse suppliers and so, costs and compatibility problems arise. In a multimission scenario these problems might be greater. This paper describes an approach based on the use of free software under Linux environment to reduce and even eliminate these compatibility and cost problems. Two systems, developed under this approach, are discussed as examples. Comments on the advantages and disadvantages are also presented.
