In this work we propose a methodology for the verification of security properties of network protocols which would help preventing possible attacks on them. The methodology can be separated in two main parts: environment and requirements analysis, and formal representation and procedural verification of the protocol. In order to illustrate the advantages provided by the procedures introduced with our methodology, we analyze three real security protocols, explaining how some flaws can be detected. The main purpose of this work is to show how, by the application of a suitable methodology, protocol designers can help to avoid Internet crime.
