A two-dimensional map of the forbidden C II (158-micron) emission from the M17 H II region/molecular cloud complex has been obtained by the frequency switching method. The emission region is found to contain two distinct components, one of which corresponds to the interface between the H II region and the M17 SW molecular cloud, while the other extends to the northeast from the H II region. Extended forbidden C II emission is detected throughout the M17 SW molecular cloud. Emission also extends to the northwest where the molecular cloud associated with M17 is not found.
