For the problem of gravitational clustering in an expanding Friedman cosmology, a new equation is derived. It is a first-order equation in time which has the same linearized growing modes as the exact second-order equation, but it is not equivalent to the exact equation. This 'foil' equation may help to answer the question: Is the nature of gravitational clustering determined largely by the linearized growing modes, or are specifically nonlinear processes important.
