The effects of a neutral gas release in the solar wind on the plasma flow dynamics were studied using a one-dimensional fluid model. Mass loading due to the pick-up of ions created by photoionization leads to a slowdown of the solar wind flow and the formation of a shock. The frozen-in magnetic field reacts by the formation of a compressed field region upstream and a magnetic cavity downstream. The fluid model is capable of reproducing details of the magnetic field variation observed in the AMPTE experiment. A simple magnetic response model which captures the basic physics involved in this behavior is proposed.
