The first detailed fit to interstellar extinction from a grain mixture that excludes graphite is presented. The inclusion of extinction due to small MgO grains as observed in the laboratory enables excellent fits to be obtained to the interstellar extinction curve between one and ten per micron using a mixture of oxide solids and amorphous carbon dust. The MgO produces the 220 nm extinction bump and eliminates the need for graphite as a component of interstellar dust.
