The successful launch of the TIMED mission in December 2001 marks the beginning of a series of unprecedented observations of the mesosphere and lower thermosphere (MLT). The SABER experiment on TIMED has been designed to provide measurements of the major radiative and chemical sources and sinks of energy in the MLT region. SABER will provide, often directly, measures of rates of solar heating from the ultraviolet to infrared, rates of heating by exothermic chemical reactions, and rates of radiative cooling by carbon dioxide, ozone, water vapor, and nitric oxide. In this talk we will provide an overview of initial calculations of the heat budget of the mesosphere, focusing on the relative roles of solar and chemical heating. Previous model studies indicate that chemical heating should exceed solar heating in the mesosphere. SABER data offer the chance to test this prediction.
