Some basic conditions, to be satisfied by any model of the ejected envelope, are given. Firstly it is recalled that reasons exist, for believing, that in early stages after optical maximum the expansion velocities in the envelope are generally larger at smaller radial distances. Indications, suggesting the opposite conclusion from the examination of emission lines, can be misleading. The highest velocities appear to be those of a wind. However Hubble flows are probably present in other stages for fast novae such as before optical maximum, while in addition the collisions between and overtaking of layers, can lead to a re-establishment of such flows in late stages. On the theoretical side the Kato and Hachisu models are physically consistent, but cannot explain the flows when luminosities are above the Thomson scattering Eddington limit. Finally published models based on detailed non-LTE radiative transfer calculations need to be modified, so as to become dynamically self consistent.
