An unusual family in the annals of astronomy was that of Hugh Breen of Armagh (1791-1848) who with his sons Hugh (b.1824), James (1826-1866) and John William (1832-1871) provided four working astronomers to the staff of the Royal Observatory Greenwich and the Cambridge University Observatory in the 19th century. Though none rose to high office, the Breens were intelligent and competent mathematicians who gave useful service to their institutions as calculators and observers. Two of the sons, Hugh and James, extended their talents to popular writing.
