The electric field generated by the tidal influence on the planet due to the baroelectric effect (i.e., electron redistribution in a nonuniformly stressed chemically inhomogeneous isothermal conductor) is investigated theoretically. The field investigated is compared with a fair-weather field over the earth surface, and it is concluded that the existence of the latter can be explained in general terms without the assumption of a substantial negative charge of the earth.
