A dynamical model of the tailed radio galaxies (TRGs) is developed in which mildly supersonic plasmoids (consisting of relativistic particles, magnetic fields and cold plasma) are ejected by the galaxy, stopped by the ram pressure of the intracluster medium, and subsequently leak electrons into a surrounding magnetic field. A simple theory for the paths of the plasmoids is given, and the effects of hydrodynamic instabilities on their evolution is discussed. The physics of the streaming process and the energy losses of the expanding electrons are analyzed. Finally we discuss the effects of buoyancy on the shape of the tail. The physical theory is applied to the radio source 3 C 129, and shown to be consistent with observation.
