The presence of extended moving groups in the solar neighborhood is investigated using the distance-independent kinematic observables: the line-of-sight velocity and the position angle of proper motion. The two observables are transformed separately to define two parameters which have a zero expected value for all stars belonging to a postulated moving group. The parameters define an observational plane that can be directly evaluated from the Galactic coordinates and the space velocity being investigated. Stars moving with a particular space velocity can therefore be focused to an origin and the procedure is used to identify the presence or absence of extended moving groups. The line-of-sight velocities and directions of proper motion of a near-complete sample of 7037 stars with m(v) not greater than 6.3 mag in the Yale Bright Star Catalogue and Supplement are qualitatively studied. Extended moving groups with the exact space velocities for the Hyades and Ursa Major clusters are not observed. Extended moving groups with smaller space velocities relative to the sun and LSR may be present in the data. Existence of these groups would require quantitative analysis for confirmation.
