The density of iron meteorites is an important property so its determination should be as accurate as possible. This study shows that the density of meteoritic iron increases with the nickel content so closely that a density can be calculated from the analysis. Thus, it is possible to co-ordinate the superior analyses and density measurements of the iron meteorites. The average measured density of hexahedrites is 7.91 which is higher than the 7.870 reported by Jette and Foote (1936) based on an X-ray study of kamacite. Plotting the composition, of these meteorites on Owen and Liu's Ni-Fe diagram (1949) we find the hexahedrites and coarsest octahedrites do not fall where they should. Either their diagram does not apply to the conditions under which meteoritic iron formed or these meteorites were rapidly cooled from a temperature of about 450°C, and therefore are not in equilibrium. independently noticed this disagreement and is presenting a possible explanation for the difference based on the effect of high pressure.
