The Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope and its associated 5120-channel digital spectrometer and standard data processing procedures are presented. Following a brief review of the basic relations used for three-dimensional aperture synthesis by the telescope system, the telescope configuration is described and the receiver and spectrometer components are examined in detail, with consideration given to the operational characteristics of the front ends, IF-to-video conversion, analog-to-digital converters and signal correlators. The computer system used to control the telescope and produce partially corrected calibration and observation data on magnetic tape is then presented, and standard procedures for off-line data processing are noted. Finally, the relevant operational parameters of the entire system in its various operating modes are summarized along with the sensitivity of the system and its stability and dynamic range as a spectral line instrument.
