The maximum possible velocity of reconnection in the regime of the diffusion current sheet (DCS) is addressed. It is shown that for a DCS in which the ratio of plasma concentrations inside and outside the sheet (N parameter) is much greater than one, the maximum possible reconnection velocity exceeds by N exp 1/4 times the reconnection velocity determined in the neutral DCS approximation. In a state of maximum reconnection velocity, the DCS has a large transverse component of the magnetic field, and the sheet plasma is accelerated mainly by the Lorentz force at the expense of the transverse component of the magnetic field.
