Measurements of stars at different distances in the direction of dark clouds in Taurus are presented in order to determine whether any difference can be discerned in the distribution with depth of the carriers of different bands. By adding together the equivalent widths of the bands within the families of Krelowski and Walker (1987), it is found that the strength of Family 2 relative to Family 3 is not constant with R, the ratio of total-to-selective extinction, but increases rapidly at first as R increases and then saturates. It is inferred that the carriers of both Families reside in the surface layers but that the carrier of Family 2 extends a little deeper into the cloud than the carrier of Family 3. From a new theory of the bands in which the carriers are various members of a series of hydrocarbon molecules, it is argued that the carrier of Family 2 bears more hydrogen atoms than that of Family 3, but not many more.
