A generalized class of image restoration methods, that includes both the maximum entropy and the band-limited image restoration methods, is investigated from a deterministic point of view. By use of these methods we can introduce additional a priori information about the original image into the reconstruction process. If we assume that the detail in the image is represented by the location of the maxima and minima of its irradiance, all the methods that we considered cannot reconstruct an image that contains more detail than can be contained in a band-limited function whose spectrum is limited to the same frequency range as that of the degraded image.
