Tests performed at the Physics Laboratories during 1974 to measure and optimize the features of a low background detection system are reported. The instruments under study included two gamma-ray detectors, a NaI (T1) scintillator and a Ge(Li) semiconductor; the performance characteristics of both detectors were compared. The other instrument was an alpha-beta particle counter (proportional counter) with low background counting. These detection systems were developed in order to differentiate the radionuclides polluting the earth atmosphere and to measure accurately their concentration and therefore monitor the environment radioactivity level.
