A balloon-borne detector designed to study gamma ray bursts in the broad energy band from 25 keV to 10 MeV is described. The active elements will be flown on a high-altitude balloon from Sioux City, South Dakota, or Palestine, Texas, in 1975, and on a long duration transatlantic balloon flight initiating from Sicily in 1976. The active elements of the detector are arrays of plastic scintillator and collimated NaI (Tl) crystals. The measurements will include time structure of the bursts with a resolution of 100 msec at the onset, decreasing by discrete logarithmic intervals to 6.4 msec after 6.5 sec, 'arrival direction', and evolution of the energy spectrum (25 keV to 25 MeV) of the bursts. During quiet times, the diffuse gamma ray background will be studied.
