Anomalous behavior of several uranium series nuclides has been observed at a metalliferous-hemipelagic site near the East Pacific Rise. Observations included a uranium peak at 30-125 cm depth in the sediment and excess radium in the biologically mixed zone which appears to correlate with manganese oxidation (0-8 cm). A model is presented which suggests that the adsorptive capacity of the sediment in regard to radium changes with manganese content, and that some radium is scavenged from the overlying seawater. The Σ230Thxs agrees with what is expected for removal from the overlying water column, but there is more Σ231Paxs than expected. No 210Pbxs is observed; it is possibly masked by 226Ra scavenged from the seawater. Very high 222Rn standing crops in the overlying water were also seen and several possible sources are discussed.
