A method for studying the variation in the rotation of the earth in historical times using ancient records of central solar eclipses is described. From the records of central eclipses covering a period of some 1400 years (7th century BC to 7th century AD), given in the Chinese annals, 88 entries are selected and used to calculate the rotation variation parameter Delta T. It is shown that the earth is spinning down at a relative rate of -(1.88 + or - 0.10) x 10 to the -10th/yr.
