While the number of known Galactic supernova remnants (SNRs) is robust, observations of these sources are hampered by such limitations as significant absorption along Galactic lines of sight and typically large uncertainties in distance estimates. To help generate a sample of SNRs suitable for study where the effects of these limitations have been minimized, we are currently conducting a multi-wavelength (X-ray, optical and radio) search for SNRs in a sample of nearby galaxies. To help illustrate the methodology of our work, we present a deep X-ray search for SNRs in the nearby face-on spiral galaxy IC 342. Using archived X-ray observations, we have searched for X-ray counterparts to SNRs identified by prior optical and radio surveys of this galaxy. We have analyzed the spectral properties of those detected counterparts to determine if the properties are consistent with known X-ray emitting SNRs. We have also conducted a separate search for candidate X-ray SNRs as well, based on positional associations between detected X-ray sources with soft spectra and HII regions in IC 342. Initial results and tentative conclusions will be presented and discussed.
