We propose to exploit the unique wide-field imaging capabilities of the Mosaic CCD Imager on the 0.92m telescope, to carry out a deep H(alpha) imaging survey of nearby galaxy clusters. The images will be used to derive a complete inventory of Hα-derived star formation rates (SFRs) for galaxies in the clusters, to limits of < 0.1 sfr. The scientific goals of the investigation are to: (1) Assess the accuracy and completeness of current measures of the cosmological SFR density, by comparing the Hα luminosity functions with those derived from objective prism surveys. (2) Determine quantitatively the fractions of present-day star formation residing in high surface brightness disks, starburst galaxies, gas-poor and low surface brightness disks, which will allow us to better understand the selection effects in lookback studies of galaxy evolution. (3) Further quantify the effects of cluster environment on disk galaxy evolution. A successful run in February 1999 confirms the effectiveness of our observing strategy. A second run is requested to obtain data for the fall half of the cluster sample. These observations are needed to provide data for sufficiently large sample of galaxies, and to extend the range of cluster environments probed. (This is a resubmission of a 1999B proposal that was lost after submission.)
