We present a deep sub-millimeter survey of the distant Universe with SCUBA on the JCMT. We take advantage of gravitational lensing by the the cores of intermediate redshift, massive cluster lenses to increase the sensitivity of our survey. The completed survey covers a total area of 0.01 sq. degrees and detects of order 20-30 sources. This cumulative number density of sub-mm sources far exceeds that expected from models based upon either the local population of star-forming galaxies, or the properties of high-redshift sources selected by Lyman-absorption. We take advantage of archival imaging from HST and ground-based telescopes to identify optical counterparts to the sub-mm sources. The colors and magnitudes derived in this way are used to place limits on the probable redshifts of the sources contributing to the sub-mm counts, while the detailed morphologies from the HST imaging allows us to constrain the physical mechanisms responsible for their strong emission in this wavelength region.
