Preliminary results are reported of a deep optical search of the error box for the April 6, 1979 gamma-ray burst. A 90-min direct IIIa-J plate exposed at the prime focus of the ESO 3.6-m telescope shows several very faint objects in the box reported by Laros et al. (1981). Statistical arguments based on published faint object counts demonstrate that most of them are probably distant galaxies unrelated to the burst sources. It is thought that the gamma-ray burst sources are galactic and therefore low-luminosity objects.
