We request 4 nights to image 0.5 sq. degrees with the BTC to extremely deep levels. These data will be used in conjunction with a deep near-IR survey to identify a sample of ~ 3,000 red galaxies in the redshift range 1 < z < 2. This optical/IR survey is designed to quantify the evolution of stellar populations in massive galaxies, the luminosity function of red galaxies at z ~ 1, the evolution of the 3-D correlation function, the properties of extremely red objects, and the epoch of formation of massive ellipticals. Our IR survey is substantialy deeper than the NOAO wide-field survey and will provide an important link between it and the very small-area, ultradeep surveys being carried out with HST and other facilties.
