PSR J1357-6429 is one of the ten youngest Galactic radio pulsars known. Using archival XMM-Newton and Chandra observations, we have detected its X-ray counterpart. The X-ray spectrum of PSR J1357 -6429 includes a non-thermal and possibly a thermal component. We also found evidence for a tantalizing diffuse structure of hard emission. We ask for a deep, 50 ks observation with EPIC in order to study the pulsar spectrum, detect the pulsations in X-rays, and probe the possible pulsar wind nebula. Confirmation of a spectral thermal component, so far detected in few radio pulsars only, would be very relevant for theoretical modeling of pulsar emission mechanisms.
