From 1995 through 2005, the Antarctic Sub-mm Telescope/Remote Observatory (AST/ RO) collected a wealth of astronomical data with its 1.7m diameter telescope at the geographic South Pole. With key projects ranging across the southern sky being observed in frequencies from 200 GHz all the way up to 2 THz, the AST/RO dataset continues to play an essential role in the understanding of galactic and extragalactic atomic and molecular clouds. This talk will discuss the history of the telescope, the special techniques that enabled its successful operation in the Antarctic environment, the exceptional observational conditions of the site itself, and a few of the telescope's observational highlights.
