The performance of a scattering X-ray polarimeter based on the Thomson
scattering was studied using a Monte Carlo simulation, and the results
were used to optimize the configuration of the polarimeter. The design
characteristics of the prototype of a cylindrical proportional counter
designed for the polarimeter on the basis of the analysis are presented.
