The Large Area Telescope (LAT) is the primary instrument on-board the Gamma-ray Large Area Space Telescope (GLAST) satellite and is being built by a world-wide collaboration including NASA, The U.S. Department of Energy, SLAC, NSSTC and many university partners. The LAT is designed to operate primarily in sky survey mode, giving complete coverage of the celestial sphere every 2 orbits (˜3 hrs). This, combined with the LAT's large (˜2 sr) FOV (FOV), energy dependent point spread function (PSF) and large data volume present a unique challenge in providing data to the user community for the study of astronomical sources.
We present the design of the public data server for the LAT Event and Photon data as well as performance benchmarks of the prototype implementation. The data server is implemented as a small cluster of Linux PCs which operates on event lists stored in FITS files. Based on the user's query, the photons matching the data cuts are extracted and presented to the user as a downloadable FITS file. A single node of the server can extract and prepare the ˜3 million photons matching a typical user's query from the ˜100 million photons in a year's worth of observational data in approximately one minute.
