This letter shows that in the flat model galaxies adopted to investigate the role of gravitational interaction in producing spiral structure and ring galaxies, the total effects considered are decidedly weaker than the cooperative effects that have been neglected. A simple criterion is given which indicates that the numerical experiments performed to clarify the formation mechanism for spiral and ring structures actually have no bearing on any spiral galaxies known today, but can only be relevant to systems with an abnormally large central mass, a case reminiscent of Saturn and its rings.
