Optical stellar spectral libraries are important principally in three areas of astrophysical problems: stellar spectral classification, verification of theoretical stellar atmospheres, and spectral synthesis of stellar populations for the determination of star formation histories in galaxies. There are several criteria a library must have to be useful for all of the above problems: precise flux calibration, a long wavelength baseline, high spectral resolution, high signal-to-noise, and complete coverage in stellar temperature, surface gravity, and metallicity. In addition, it must be publicly available in a user- friendly archive. None of the spectral libraries currently in use meet all of these criteria. While most spectral libraries miss the mark in spectral resolution, virtually all of them lack coverage in metallicity space, including the two most widely used libraries, Jacoby, Hunter, & Christian (1984) and Silva & Cornell (1992). We are assembling a library, the Coude Feed Spectral Library, which meets all of the stated criteria. In addition to finishing stars with missing grating settings from earlier observing runs we propose to complete a major augmentation of this spectral library, particularly in regard to metallicity coverage, working from several recent compilations of high- quality spectroscopic metallicity determinations of both dwarfs and giants. Portions of our spectral library have already been made publicly available through the NOAO FTP archive, and the rest of the library will be made available as it becomes completed.
