The merits of five general theories for the origin of galaxies and large-scale structure in the universe are compared with 38 observational constraints from extragalactic astronomy. The constraints, which involve basic cosmological parameters, the cosmic background radiation, high-redshift phenomena, the largest structures, small-scale clustering evolution of galaxies at z less than 1, and the structure of galaxies are used to obtain quality ratings for the cold dark matter theory, the hot dark matter model, the explosion picture, the baryonic dark matter model, and string theory. The baryonic dark matter model and the cold dark matter model have a barely significant advantage over the explosion picture and string theory, while the hot dark matter theory is last.
