Simultaneous optical and infrared observations of an outburst of the active galaxy Mrk 744 are presented. Cross-correlation analysis reveals that the infrared light curve is delayed and extended relative to the optical with a lag time of 32 +/- 7 days. Dust at a radius of 32 light-days would have an equilibrium temperature of 1130 K, based on the integrated UV luminosity of ~1042 ergs s-1. A simple model that reprocesses the observed optical pulse into IR wavelengths falls far short of reproducing the observed outburst, unless both the UV luminosity and amplitude of variability are increased. These two parameters, along with the maximum grain temperature, become well constrained in a simple model that can fully explain the observed IR variability behavior of this object as arising from thermal dust reverberation.
