When making a photographic determination of the proper motion of open clusters, a linear model is usually adopted which assumes that the reference stars whose proper motions are unknown satisfy certain conditions. When these conditions are not satisfied, the calculated proper motions are not the same as the relative proper motions, and the difference between them depends on the position of the reference stars on the plate. In this paper, a method of correctly calculating the relative proper motion when the conditions are not satisfied is presented.
