We identify a variety of design options to meet the difficult problem of directly observing extrasolar terrestrial planets with a visible-light coronagraph as part of the Terrestrial Planet Finder (TPF) mission. Classifying the main technological challenges for such approaches, we discuss the roles of, and requirements for, optical quality, mechanical and thermal stability, and several other factors critical to coronagraphic performance. We give estimates of the technology readiness levels of these critical factors, and describe paths toward the implementation of TPF.
