Image dissector scanner data and spectroscopic data of the white dwarf BPM 4729 are presented and analyzed. The metal abundance is deduced to be less than 0.0001 of the solar value. The spectrum shows a steep Balmer decrement with only H-alpha and H-beta visible. This observation is in agreement with recent theoretical computations and suggests that hydrogen-rich white dwarfs with electron temperatures of no more than 5000 K should show no Balmer lines. It is shown that the spectrum of BPM 4729 is unique among white dwarfs in that the visible Balmer lines are broadened by self-broadening.
