The consequences of prompt cosmic ray production intrinsic to supernovae are examined for supernova explosions occurring in dense molecular clouds. For reasonable parameters it is shown that prompt cosmic ray production cannot exceed 1048 erg per supernova. This suggests that cosmic ray production takes place mainly in the intercloud medium.
