A constrained least-squares method is proposed for solving inverse scattering problems for radiative transfer in a scattering medium without solid boundaries, and its validity is illustrated by several test computations. The proposed method is used to estimate the albedo and the Henyey-Greenstein phase function of a scattering medium in order to minimize the sum of the squares of the differences between the observed and estimated emerging intensities at the two boundaries of the medium. The procedure is shown to work well, even for noisy data.
