A design concept for a new class of hard X-ray telescope using synthetic multilayer structures as X-ray reflecting elements has been developed. The choice of multilayer spacing as a function of position allows the telescope to be tuned to a specific X-ray wavelength. The multilayers are deposited on flat surfaces of umanageable size, unlike previous designs which required the deposition of multilayers on large concave surfaces. The designs of the required multilayer structures, of the telescope mirror, and of a telescope tuned to 100 keV and sized for a Space Shuttle launch are examined.
