We propose to undertake a comprehensive study of waterproduction and photochemistry in comets using coordinated HSTand ground-based echelle spectroscopic measurements of abright comet. The brightness and shape of the H LyAlpha lineprofile will be measured at various locations in the innercoma using GHRS, which has a factor of 4 better spectralresolution than has ever been obtained for LyAlpha in cometsand 2 better than ground-based observations of HAlpha. FOSwill be used to measure the OH(0-0) emission brightness andmonitor any short-term variations. A LyAlpha image of thewhole inner coma will be constructed with WFPC 2 using theF160BW and F130LP filters. The HST LyAlpha and OH(0-0)measurements will be coordinated with a ground-based echelle-spectroscopy campaign of observing the HAlpha line profile andthe OI 6300Angstrom emission and monitoring the longer termvariability of the comet. It is only through the self-consistent analysis of such a coordinated set of observationsthat we can hope to gain a better quantitative understandingof the details of the production and photochemistry of waterin comets, such as: (1) the ejection velocity distribution ofH atoms and (via conservation of momentum) OH radicals, (2)the branching ratio of the two main dissociation branches, (3)the effects of collisional thermalization of H atoms, and (4)any spatial and line profile asymmetries from asphericaloutgassing.
