The results of a survey of the 287 field of variable quasars performed with the high-speed COSMOS measuring machine at the Royal Observatory in Edinburgh, Scotland are reported. The sample of variables in field 287 was chosen on the basis of a variation in B of 0.3m in one year, resulting in the inclusion of 106 objects. The spectral characteristics of the objects were used to identify quasar candidates. The use of variability as a selection method for quasars is discussed, and the integrated number/magnitude relation for the complete sample of objects is analyzed using a least squares fit. A series of graphic illustrations of the integrated number/magnitude relation of the sample is provided.
