CO observations toward a spiral arm region of M31 show that CO emission is a better tracer of the spiral structure than the HI emission indicating enhanced formation of molecular clouds in spiral arms. An HI scale height of h(HI) of about 340 pc can be determined for all possible values of h(CO) by comparing the CO and HI line widths. The fraction of gas in molecular form is only 13 percent, which also points to the destruction and formation of molecular clouds in the arms on time-scales of a few tens of millions of years.
