Theoretical supernova rates as a function of galactic color B - V are calculated for two models of Type I supernovae: (a) mass transfer in a binary system and (b) massive, single stars. The latter model can be made to agree with the observations by appropriately choosing the mass range of supernova progenitors and assuming that there is continuing star formation in elliptical galaxies. Agreement between the binary model and the observations is possible if systems with low-mass secondaries (about 1 solar mass) require an initially massive primary (about 4 solar masses). Although this is plausible on physical grounds, detailed calculations including the necessary physical processes have not yet been made. This may present a useful constraint on future models of Type I supernovae.
