Spectral characteristics of small regions of the major and minor axes of the bilaterally symmetrical nebula, NGC 7009, are compared with those of the east ansa. Long recognized point by point excitation differences between various regions of this nebula complicate chemical composition studies, whether one uses conventional procedures of ionization correction or attempts to employ nebular models. The importance of observing faint lines to improve nebular plasma diagnostics or to extend the number of observed ionization stages of elements such as neon, sulphur, chlorine and argon is emphasized.
