The Mars polar caps have an area comparable to that of the Earth's polar ice sheets. However, unlike the terrestrial ice caps, the martian polar caps consist of H2O and CO2/H2O(?) ices on thick layered (H2O + silt + sand) deposits. Terrestrial and martian polar caps are significantly different in composition, stratigraphy, and age, although on both planets the volatiles originate from the atmospheres. Geothermal basal melting has also been proposed for martian polar caps. Taking into account some evidence of riftogenesis in polar regions of Mars, it is possible that similar lakes may exist here too, although they would likely consist of water and fine sediments from layered deposits.
