A synthetic Mg2 index is presented to examine the behavior of Mg2 on stellar parameters including surface gravity, effective temperature, and atmospheric characteristics. The synthetic spectra are developed in a model based on the ATLAS8 code with specific attention given to the computations of MgH and Mg b at 5177 A. The results are compared to observed fluxes of a sample of dwarf and giant stars, and systematic differences are noted in the three bands which define the Mg2 index. Statistical tests are applied to the data, and the differences in flux values are found to be related to the stellar parameters of temperature and metallicity. The present study demonstrates the utility of a complete reference grid of spectral indices and also shows the applicability of such a grid in interpreting the integrated light of stellar systems.
