A discussion is given of the large-scale properties of the disks and spheroids of the Galaxy, NGC 891, and NGC 4565. It is concluded that the disks of the Galaxy and NGC 4565 are very similar, while that of NGC 891 may be less luminous but otherwise similar. The spheroid of NGC 4565 is brighter and structurally different from those in NGC 891 and in the Galaxy, which are very closely comparable. Surface photometry of the spheroid of NGC 891 can be fitted equally satisfactorily by an R to the 1/4 power-spheroid' with changing axis ratio of the isophotes and by a fainter R to the 1/4 power-spheroid with uniform flattening plus an intermediately flattened component with exponential drop-offs in R and z.
