The spectra of 10 late-type dwarfs are compared with synthetic spectra. Effective temperatures and metallicities are estimated using two techniques, generally under the assumption that log {g} = 5.0. The stars are also classified according to their CaH and TiO band-strength indices. Three of the 10 prove to be extreme subdwarfs, three are subdwarfs, and the remaining four are apparently members of the old disk population, two of them being close binaries. Metallicities span the range -2.5<= [M/H]<= 0.0, but the esdM stars seem to be rather more metal-rich than might have been expected; this result may arise from the fact that the metal-poor halo stars do not have the scaled solar abundance patterns assumed in the underlying model atmospheres.
